Distance 9.2 Miles Hight Gained 1006 ft Difficulty Easy Weather Cool, calm and bright Company Solo This walk was basically a stroll along the beach to Sandsend and a little further into the old Alum workings which were in production from 1607 until 1867. This industry was responsible for dramatically changing the North Yorkshire coastline for ever by leaving abandoned quarries and in some parts, a desert landscape where even today over 260 years after, nothing can grow. The rest of the area however is being reclaimed by nature and is home to animals and birds of all description. I returned to Whitby along the beach and made my way home through the town. | |
