Distance 4.5 Miles
Hight gained 400 ft
Difficulty Easy
Weather Bright & sunny although rather cool
Company Solo.
Not a long walk today although I found it to be interesting. I parked the car at Ellerbeck and followed the followed the track to Fen Bog with the intention of following the waymarked track. Unfortunately it was very slippery underfoot so I turned back after a little way and followed the Lyke Wake walk up onto Howl Moor instead. I couldn't help but notice the lack of walkers, there was a time that there would have been several groups of Lyke Wake Walkers in sight at this time of day on almost any weekend and Ellerbeck would be full of cars with support parties. In one respect perhaps it is a good thing because erosion of the footpaths was certainly becoming a big problem as one of the photos below shows. I remember the first time that I completed the walk it was little more than a sheep track through the heather.
When I arrived at Simon Howe I was pleasantly surprised to see that a smart new cairn had been erected fairly recently, I remembered it as nothing more than a pile of stones scattered about. After taking a few photos I returned to the car by the same route
