Distance 11.6 miles
Climbing 1675 ft
Difficulty Moderate
Weather Fine & Sunny
I have just taken delivery of a new pair of La Sportiva Hiking/ mountain boots for which I paid very little money in an auction on e-bay. As soon as I put them on I realised that they would need to be ‘broken in’ before I use them for any real distance walking. I suppose that they are more suitable for climbing than hiking but at less than £20 I think they are worth trying.
I decided to set out for Sandsend via the field paths and see how it went. Usually I am fortunate enough to be able to don a pair of new boots and walk almost any distance and feel quite comfortable in them, but on this occasion I felt some discomfort. The boots are rather narrow fitting and had I gone to a shop rather than bought them on-line I would probably not have bought them.
Once I reached Sandsend I decided to push on a bit further and eventually reached Runswick Bay where I stopped for a sandwich at the tea garden near the bus stop. The walk itself had been very pleasant with the air full of the scent of wild roses whenever I passed them. The footpath was busy too with lots of elderly ramblers, the only exception being a party of about 20 young ladies who were making their way in the general direction of Whitby. After my sandwich I decided to carry on to Staithes and return home on the bus.
When I took off the boots I was surprised that I had not blistered at all but it was certainly a relief.
